The lakes were once tidal with significant changes in water levels. Historical evidence has revealed that the dinosaurs literally emerged from the water when the levels went down.
No major interventions are proposed for the recently-restored and newly Grade I listed dinosaurs and their geological installations, although there would be work undertaken to improve path surfaces, introduce enhanced lake-side planting and most importantly the removal of obtrusive fences. Where recent planting has not succeeded it would be replaced.
The existing Park café is small, old and lacks connection to the lakes. The most obvious improvement to the area will be the construction of dinosaur-themed Dinosaur Interpretation Centre at the north end of the lake providing a lakeside south facing wooden platform overlooking the lake. This building would include a shop to sell dinosaur-related merchandise, a ticket office for boat hire, an education suite and toilet. The two timber clad towers of the building are designed to encourage habitation by bats.
The Centre will be set into the surrounding topography, rising up the lake from the Penge entrance to the Park. It is envisaged the Centre will also double as an events venue available for hire.
Alongside the Dinosaur Interpretation Centre there would be a dinosaur-themed playground, a climbable play sculpture possibly referring to the dinosaur fossils and footprints.
Among other considerations for the area would be the opportunity to incorporate and support habitats for beetles, bugs, dragonflies, woodlice and lizards.
Repairs to the remaining Paxton Fountain Basin next to the farm would be needed, improving its setting.
The masterplan proposes a new composting area adjacent to the farm which will be sited to avoid the loss of any existing trees. The woodland in the area pre-dates the Park and is therefore of great heritage and ecological importance.
The nearby Farm, to be run by Capel Manor College, is scheduled to re-open in January 2008. Improving the connection of the Park with Penge West station is also a key aim.
