The Masterplan Vision

Paxton Axis Perspective

Restoring the Paxton Axis

The masterplan proposes major changes in this area, particularly around the National Sports Centre (NSC). One of these changes includes the removal of the concrete podium between the main NSC building and athletics stadium and the re-instatement of Paxton's axis at a raised ground level, to create a new central avenue through the park.

The removal of surrounding structures would allow the Grade II* listed NSC to be appreciated as a freestanding pavilion, as originally intended, with a direct relationship with the Park. This would result in improving the surrounding views and the Park’s character.

This new walkway would be lined by a series of small defined spaces, which blend with the landscape to provide different interpretations and themes along the pathway.

The former racetrack would be set at a new higher level and would be re-surfaced and re-routed to provide a circuit for access and a course for events. It would accommodate parking adjacent to the stadium and be set in between trees to minimise impact on the historic landscape.

The transitional landscape part of the axis will be flanked by attenuation ponds which will store rain water and form a key part of the Park’s sustainable water management system, and run via the English landscape and past the dinosaur interpretation centre through to the lower lake.

A play area would be built into the wooded bank to the east of the NSC and sheltered with hedges.
